BEYOND BROADWAY SCHOOL PROGRAM

BEYOND BROADWAY SYNOPSIS

Beyond Broadway is a 4-6 week program for 1st – 6th graders held in a traditional school setting that teaches students the fundamentals of classic Jazz and Broadway movement.  Exercises include general flexibiltiy and fitness while dancing to original show music and choreography.  Similar to Beyond Ballroom, the program is implemented as part of students’ weekly academic schedule.   However, in Beyond Broadway, children dance individually, not in partner teams.   Both programs culminate with an in-school performance for students, faculty, and family.

Students and teachers can choose from several different shows including, ALADDIN, A CHORUS LINE, WILL ROGERS FOLLIES, CATS, HAMILTON, SHREK, PAJAMA GAME.   Each year, the programs expands to include several new musicals.   Students will be provided with costume accessories to wear for final performance.

Schedule of Beyond Broadway

The program runs for four to six weeks, with each class having two 30-minute rehearsals per week.  That is an average of only 4 hours outside of their regular daily schedule to prepare for the performance.  The final week, costumes are distributed, and student speakers are assigned.  There are two full-company rehearsals, with staging, before the final production.

  • To get the children excited, the program starts with a “KICK-OFF” workshop in the school gym with the entire grade together.  Moving forward, each class will learn a different dance and rehearse separately twice per week.
  • Children miss very little academic class time in Beyond Broadway.  Typically, four hours are missed during the entire program unless additional rehearsals are required.
  • At the conclusion of the program, schools typically schedule two performances during the day for fellow students and teachers, and one evening performance for parents and guests. This, however, can be changed to accommodate a school’s specific needs.  The entire production takes 30-45 minutes.
  • After the production, teachers are resonsible to collect costumes from the dancers to return to the studio.
